If you want to learn to kite and glide across the water in a summer atmosphere in the middle of winter, Mui Ne is one of the best places in Asia. A steady, moderate wind blows here for months on end, from a very safe direction. A long sandy beach runs along the coast, and the water stays warm even in January. Here is everything you need to know before you go.
When to go: the kitesurfing season in Mui Ne
The main kite season in Mui Ne runs from November to March. The north-east monsoon blows during these months and there is wind almost every day. The most reliable period is January to March: steady wind, a dry and mild climate and no rain. The weather is very comfortable — it never gets too hot thanks to nature's own air conditioning, the wind.
From May to September the wind is lighter and changes direction. You can still ride, but less often and mostly on bigger kites. In those months we recommend Nha Trang, where a thermal wind blows in summer. April and October are transition months with unpredictable wind.
New Year is the busiest time of the season. If you are coming then, book your lessons in advance. Early December is the quietest and most affordable time to visit.
Wind and water
The average wind in season is 16–23 knots (8–12 m/s), stronger on peak days. The wind blows almost like clockwork, from 10 am to 6 pm. Mornings are usually softer and the wind builds towards midday, so first lessons work best in the morning.
On the main beach the wind blows along the shore or slightly onshore. That is a safe direction for kitesurfing: if something goes wrong, the wind brings you back to the beach rather than out to sea.
The water is warm all year and you usually don't need a wetsuit — a rash vest or a long-sleeved T-shirt for sun protection is enough.
Myth: Mui Ne has big waves and is hard to learn
The most popular myth about Mui Ne is that it has big waves and is a hard place to learn kitesurfing. That is only partly true. Big waves in Mui Ne are a treat, and when they roll in we don't teach — we go riding ourselves.
For most of the season the water has chop — small waves, and those conditions are perfectly fine for learning. There is a reason Mui Ne is one of the most popular kite spots not just in Asia but in the world.
Why Mui Ne is great for beginners
Many riders take their very first lessons here. Here is why:
- A wide sandy beach. There is room to launch and land the kite safely, practise on the sand and stay out of other people's way.
- Steady, moderate wind. It is less gusty than many other spots, which makes learning kite control easier.
- A safe wind direction. The wind blows along the shore or slightly onshore, so it always brings you back to the beach.
- Warm water. You can spend hours in the sea without a wetsuit and never get cold.
- Many windy days in a row. You can finish a full course in one trip without long breaks for calm days.
- Facilities. Kite stations have compressors, showers, gear storage and shade, so you can rest between sessions.
Beginners should always learn with an instructor and on the right part of the beach. At our school, first lessons take place on the widest stretch of the beach and start in the morning, when the wind is softer.
What it offers experienced riders
Mui Ne is not just for beginners. When the wind picks up, there is plenty to keep progressing:
- Waves in parts of the bay, for riders who want to try wave riding.
- Strong wind on peak days for jumps and freestyle.
- Downwinders along the coast — we run full-day group downwind safaris to the lighthouse.
- Competitions and community. Every winter riders from Europe, Asia and Australia come here, and local competitions take place.
Where to ride: Mui Ne spots
Mui Ne beach stretches for several kilometres, and conditions vary along it:
- The main beach is the most popular spot. Side-shore wind and plenty of space make it good for lessons and riders of every level. It gets crowded in peak season.
- Malibu beach has onshore wind, chop and waves. It suits experienced riders.
- Remote spots with rocks and narrow beaches are for advanced riders only.
Not sure where to ride today? Ask the instructors: they check the forecast every day and will suggest a spot for your level.
In Mui Ne our school is based at our friends' kite station, C2Sky Kite Center. All our lessons start from here.
How the lessons work
Lessons at Always Summer run in 2-hour sessions, one a day. A personal instructor stays with you for the whole course and all equipment is included. Our instructors speak English and Russian.
In the intro lesson you learn safety rules, how to set up and launch the kite and how to control it on the beach and possibly in the water. The basic course adds body dragging, self-rescue and your first water starts. By the end of the full course most students ride in both directions, control their speed and know how to pick a kite size for the wind.
After the course you receive an international IKO certificate that lets you rent kites at schools around the world.
Getting there and where to stay
The nearest major airport is Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City. From there Mui Ne is about 4 hours by the new expressway, by limousine bus or private transfer.
Accommodation runs the whole length of the beach, from guesthouses to seafront hotels. It is easiest to stay close to the kite station so you can walk to your lessons.
On days without wind there is plenty to do: the red and white sand dunes, the fishing village and the Fairy Stream are all a few minutes' drive away.
