Kitesurfing in Nha Trang: summer season, wind and learning from scratch

Nha Trang is our summer spot: while southern Vietnam is calm, a soft thermal wind blows here over flat water. Here is when to go and who it suits.

Season: May – September Average wind: 12–16 knots Flat water

If you want to kitesurf in Vietnam in summer, Nha Trang is the place. While Mui Ne and Phan Rang are off-season (though there is still some wind there too), a soft thermal wind blows here. Flat water, cross-shore wind and an almost empty beach — a local secret we're happy to share. Here is everything you need to know before you go.

When to go: the summer season in Nha Trang

The kite season in Nha Trang runs from May to September. The winter monsoon dies down and a thermal wind takes over: the land heats up during the day and a steady breeze comes in from the sea.

Summer in Nha Trang is sunny with a calm sea, so it suits both kiting and a family beach holiday. In winter, from November to March, we ride in Mui Ne and Phan Rang, where the monsoon blows.

Our spot is on Nha Trang's city beach, a little south of the central beach, opposite the Best Western Premier Marvella Nha Trang hotel. It is quiet in summer, so there is always room for lessons. During the peak of the summer holidays it is still best to book in advance.

Wind and water

The average wind in season is 12–16 knots (6–8 m/s). It is a light thermal wind that builds towards midday and fades in the evening. For these conditions we use large kites and hydrofoils.

The wind blows along the shore, a safe direction that neither pulls you out to sea nor pushes you onto the beach. The water in the bay is flat, with hardly any waves.

The water is very warm in summer and you don't need a wetsuit — a rash vest or a long-sleeved T-shirt for sun protection is enough.

Why Nha Trang is great for beginners

  • Soft wind. The kite pulls smoothly without sudden jerks, so learning to control it is calmer.
  • Flat water. No waves makes it easier to keep your balance and make your first rides.
  • Cross-shore wind. A safe direction that makes it easy to get back to where you started.
  • An almost empty beach. Plenty of room to launch the kite and practise on the sand.
  • A warm sea. You can stay in the water for a long time without getting cold.

In light wind the right kite matters, so we match all the gear to the wind and your weight every session.

Hydrofoiling and light wind

Nha Trang in summer is a great place for kite foiling. A board on an underwater wing lifts above the water and rides even in light wind, when a regular board struggles. The flat water in the bay is exactly what you need for your first flights on a foil.

If you already kite and want to try something new, summer in Nha Trang is a good time to learn foiling with an instructor.

Nha Trang or the winter spots

We follow the wind: in winter we work in Mui Ne and Phan Rang, in summer in Nha Trang. The winter spots bring strong monsoon wind, while Nha Trang offers a soft breeze and flat water. If it is your first time on a kite or you want to learn foiling, summer in Nha Trang is ideal. If you want jumps and strong wind, come to Mui Ne or Phan Rang in winter.

How the lessons work

Lessons at Always Summer run in 2-hour sessions, one a day. A personal instructor stays with you for the whole course and all equipment is included. Our instructors speak English and Russian.

In the intro lesson you learn safety rules, how to set up and launch the kite and how to control it on the beach and possibly in the water. The basic course adds body dragging, self-rescue and your first water starts. By the end of the full course most students ride in both directions, control their speed and know how to pick a kite size for the wind.

After the course you receive an international IKO certificate that lets you rent kites at schools around the world.

Getting there and what to see

Fly into Cam Ranh International Airport — about 35 km from the city, roughly 45 minutes by taxi or transfer. Our station is on the beach a little south of the central beach, opposite the Best Western Premier Marvella Nha Trang hotel. If you stay in the centre, you can walk to your lesson or get there in a few minutes.

In your free time you can take a boat to the islands and go snorkelling, visit the Po Nagar Cham towers, try the mud baths or just relax on the city beach — Nha Trang is one of Vietnam's most popular resorts.
