Kitesurfing for beginners: from zero to riding

Never stood on a board? That's fine — most of our students start with no experience. Here is how the lessons work and what to expect.

No experience needed Personal instructor About 10 hours to ride on your own

Kitesurfing looks hard, but it is easier to learn than it seems. What you need is warm water, steady wind and an instructor who takes you step by step. Vietnam has all of that almost all year round.

Who can learn

Kitesurfing is not about arm strength. You hold the kite with your body weight: it is clipped to you through a waist or seat harness, so women, teenagers and older riders can all learn it, whatever their fitness level. You need to be comfortable in the water and ready for the first sessions to start on the beach.

Surfing, wakeboarding or snowboarding experience helps, but it is not required. Many of our students held a kite for the first time with us.

How the lessons work, step by step

Sessions last 2 hours, one session a day. A personal instructor stays with you for the whole course, and all equipment is included.

  • On the beach. Safety, wind direction, setting up the kite, launching it and steering it on land.
  • Body drag. You go into the water without a board and the kite pulls you along, so you learn to feel the power and get back to your board.
  • Water start. Your first attempts to stand up on the board and ride a few metres.
  • Riding. Speed control, riding in both directions and choosing the kite size for the wind.

How many hours it takes

Most students need about 10 hours with an instructor to start riding on their own. Some need less, some more — it depends on the wind, the water and your background in other board sports.

We offer three formats: an intro lesson (2 hours), a basic course (6 hours) and a full course (10 hours). Prices are in our guide “How much does it cost to learn kitesurfing”.

Safety

A beginner should learn with an instructor, on the right kite size and in the right part of the spot. We match the gear to the wind and your weight, use a helmet and an impact vest, and start lessons in the morning when the wind is softer.

After the course you get an international IKO certificate, which lets you rent kites at schools around the world.

  • Phan Rang — flat, shallow lagoon water; season November to April.
